When you get to a point of feeling overwhelmed in your home knowing how to start decluttering and organising can feel like a daunting task.
Often the reason you have got to a point of feeling overwhelmed is because of circumstances such as being time poor, perhaps you work long hours or you have caring responsibilities, perhaps a new baby or you are caring for older relatives. There are so many different reasons why someone has got the point of no longer feeling comfortable within their home.
When you are in this situation the best way forward is to start small and have a plan.
When we break things down into easy steps it is easier to tackle any challenge and as we work through the steps we gain the motivation to continue on the journey.
Here are some tips on getting started and taking control of your home:
Carve out some time, grab a notebook and write down the areas of your home that are causing you the most stress.
Once you’ve narrowed down those pain point areas you should plan to tackle them first as these will give you a feeling of real progress and motivate you to continue.
Break it down into small chunks of time, deciding what is realistic for you. Can you only commit to 15mins a day? Perhaps you could do 1 hour an evening.
Then it is time to get started if you are tackling a full room, start with a box, a cupboard or a drawer and go from there. If you are tackling a wardrobe, go through each area by category – Jeans / Tops / Jackets, doing one at a time.
Empty the space out completely so you can see and touch everything.
Create clear categories – Keep / Donate / Bin or Recycle / Sell.
Be kind to yourself, if you are struggling to let things go come back to it at another point and see how you feel.
Get a friend or family member involved if they are willing to help, it can be good to have someone to support you.
Keep checking in on your progress, tick areas off a list can help motivate you and remind you how far you’ve come. As you start to see the benefits of having things in order and gaining more space in your home you should naturally start to feel more motivated.
